How to Stop Spam Bots Messing Up Your Analytics
When looking initially at a new client’s Google Analytics data, we constantly find a variety of spam bots and irrelevant referral traffic to their sites. This is unhelpful when deciphering strategies for content and analysing what is working and what isn’t on the website – what we all want is the actual data. That way we can create clear proposals of which actions we need to take to improve a page or user flow of a website.
What is a spam bot?
A spam bot is an automated computer program that has been designed to assist in the sending of spam. Forum spam bots search the web looking for blogs, forums and other types of web forms to be able to submit fake content. Some spam that is targeted towards readers, via the use of phishing or target marketing, makes it hard to tell genuine posts from fake, bot-generated ones. Other spam bots, which aren’t targeted to readers, are posted to increase the number of hyperlinks to a website to boost its rankings. Bad bots mess up analytics and slow down loading times, which can produce lower website rankings.
Why am I getting spam bots on my website?
Spam bots hit websites for a variety of reasons. Some appear to direct affiliate traffic to e-commerce sites or others, such as the very well-known Semalt.com, collect information from your website that can then be shared with your competitors (whilst messing up your website analytics of course!). Semalt claims to be a professional webmaster analytics tool yet, when searching the company name on Google, seems to cause many issues for site owners and analytic researchers.
How to stop the spam bots…via your htaccess
Blocking the referrer’s spam is thankfully very easy. On your Apache server and within the root directory of your domain, you can block them in your htaccess file. Simply copy and paste the following code. You’ll need someone tech-savvy to do this, if a single character is out of place this will most likely bring down the website.
